While visiting my mom for Mother's Day weekend, I indulged in my usual habit of leafing through her decor and lifestyle magazines. At some point along the way, I landed on a Southern Living issue that seemed to transport me right into the middle of Summer -- a scrumptious, mouth-watering, refreshing Summer to be exact.
It's true that we eat with our eyes first. (At least that's true for me.) And page after page presented recipes that spawned an inner excitement followed by the exclamation, "Oooh, I'm going to make that!" It's the raw inspiration that keeps me excited about the joys of cooking and eating.
To make sure I could follow through on my new found excitement, I asked my mom if I could "borrow" her magazine and bring it home with me. :) She graciously obliged and as the days of Summer unfold, I look forward to making many of the vibrant dishes that will make this one of the tastiest seasons yet.
While I have my mom's August 2012 hard copy edition on hand, I wanted to share the love with these links to some of my favorite recipes from that issue via SouthernLiving.com.

Swoon-Worthy Interiors
"An interior is the natural projection of the soul." ~Coco Chanel
Coco said it best.
And gorgeously designed home interiors are especially soul-stirring and wake-up the dreamer in me. Growing up, I (reluctantly) watched my mom and aunts throw themselves into decorating their homes. And nothing has changed on that front these many years later. Well, nothing, except my awakening to an equal thrill and love for creating my own world of beautiful and inspiring personal spaces.
And because of that, I love to seek inspiration and turn-up the dream machine for all the possibilities interior design can offer. I have a running list of everything from closets, to kitchens, to bathrooms, to living rooms, to libraries, accessories, and more, to fuel my penchant and keep me swooning.

Quarantine Fitness: Staying Fit Within the Comfort of Your Home
What a difference a month can make.
That could be the understatement of the year, and if I had to wager a guess, I'd say that I'm spot on that no one anticipated the current "reality" that ushered in quickly and un-apologetically. For me the impact from the Corona Virus was felt socially almost immediately, as I canceled standing birthday plans and began my duty to self-quarantine and practice physical distancing. A negligible concession against the backdrop of a global pandemic.
I know this shift to a “new normal” affects everyone differently, so I hope you will remember to be kind and gentle with yourself as you continue to adjust in the days ahead. And about adjusting… If you were accustomed to a regular fitness routine outside of your living quarters, then, like me, you’re pivoting to online workout resources to keep you moving, fit (and, let’s be honest, sane.)

round-up to your fitness arsenal.
Self-care has never been more critical than it is now, so be
sure to incorporate #quarantinefitness into your routine and stay well and
safe.

{Be Inspired!}: Leah Chase, Culinary and Cultural Pioneer
![]() |
| Leah Chase |
At 91 years young, Leah Chase continues to stand strong in her culinary prowess and inspire the many who know something of her pioneering story and legacy. A New Orleans based chef, restauranteur, author and television personality, known as the Queen of Creole, Ms. Chase's legacy is an inspiring fixture of black history--my history--in America.
Her legendary family restaurant, Dooky Chase's, was a key gathering place for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's, as well as for music, entertainment and culture in New Orleans and has been lauded for its extensive gallery of African-American art. Still considered to be the signature restaurant for Creole cuisine, I can't wait to visit (and indulge!) when I finally make my way to NOLA. And if I'm really fortunate, I hope to meet this living legend in person.
Her numerous achievements and honors speak for themselves, including a formidable restart after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, and keep me inspired to continue pursuing and achieving my God-given dreams.
Thank you, Ms. Chase, for inspiring me and countless others, and for being a beautiful reflection of Black History.

{Travel Like a Pro}: City Life x Public Transit
| A Paris Metro Station |
For a traveler who seeks to make the most of her time in a given destination (read: immersion in the local culture and scene--with lots of to and fro), they all share a gem that has been invaluable in making my forays in each city real life #travelgoals. The gem of which I speak is the public transit system that each possesses for getting locals, and visitors, alike, around town in the cheapest (yes, to that!) and often most warp speed, efficient manner (double yes to that!).
| London's Public Subway aka The Tube |
The following Summer found me similarly planted in Washington, D.C. to take on a stint as a Legislative Aide on Capitol Hill. It was a dream opportunity in an already favorite city, but the girl had no car. (In truth, my car was back home awaiting my return, based on a judicious decision thrust upon me by my mama. She was not about to chance my then still questionable driving skills against the D.C. traffic.)
| Inside a Bangkok Transit System Station |
Fast forward several years later and the merits of public transport were a distant memory and thing of the past. In those pre-Uber/Lyft days, I was the taxi cab queen (with an occasional private car and driver added to the mix.) Beyond the coins that were consumed, I was largely relegated to the destinations in my direct queue and minimally ventured much further beyond to gain broader exposure. In retrospect, I was happy and loving it, but didn't know (or rather forgot) what else I could have enjoyed.
| The Louvre Museum Metro Station in Paris |
My ultimate local navigation style includes a medley of public transportation (weather permitting, daylight mostly, non-heel wearing goings) and taxi/ride sharing transportation (mostly when the above conditions are reversed.) I feel like such the "big girl" and local when I'm out there navigating those city terrains and hopping on and off the train. And then there's the fringe benefit of being more aware of and connected to my surroundings, making my travels all the more fulfilling.
Often the simplest things have the biggest payoff and, in the world of big city exploration and mobility, this is definitely one of them. If you're not already on the public transit bandwagon, I highly recommend it.
Happy Travels!

Postcard from Cuba: 24 Hours in Havana
What is it like when you finally place your feet on a once forbidden, mystery shrouded, yet increasingly exposed, land? For me, emerging from my cruise ship's portal into the wide-open, humidity-laced, sun-scorched land of Havana, Cuba was on the sorts of a traveler's dream come true. With little more than 24 hours to explore and experience the phenomenon that has become Cuba, I hardly knew where to begin. And yet, somehow I did.
Before I managed to wander far, my fantasy to cruise the streets of historic Havana in classic Cubano style (read: in the backseat of a top-down, brightly-hued, old-school style convertible) was becoming a living reality. I contained my excitement long enough to arrange a two-hour tour, replete with a driver narrative of historic sights (albeit in Spanish) and occasional stops to allow for further exploration, photo ops and in-the-moment revelry.

My initial hours in Cuba were shaping up to be exactly what I had anticipated prior to arriving--except for the intense heat, I must concede. But sweat pours aside, being greeted by exuberant locals who often mistook me for Dominican or Brazilian before I explained I was American, to ingesting the old, preserved architecture, color-dotted buildings that lined narrow streets and winding alleys, and the very apparent living conditions that reflect a local lifestyle that is still greatly impacted by the decades of relative oppression, was reminiscent of the authentic lens that I seek in my travels.

As day gave way to night, I prepared to reemerge onto the local scene and experience a Havana night that would further punctuate my time there with yet another high note. A lover of music, dance, theater and musicals since forever, I decided on a Cabana-Style show in the Parisien Cabaret of the famous Hotel National de Cuba. It turned out to be over-the-top in ways both good and not so good, so pace yourself if something more subdued is typically your pleasure. Even still, it was clear that the performers shared their hearts with us and left it all on the stage, as they sang and dance the hours away.
The next morning found me resolved to brave the Cuban sun once more to take advantage of the remaining time at port. Time dedicated to perusing and absorbing more of the essence of Havana.
I stumbled upon and browsed an outdoor bookshop, toured a nearby museum, chatted with a local or two, and snapped final parting shots, before returning to the ship and bidding farewell to this previous enigma, turned slightly familiar place. And for a little more than 24 hours, I relished it all.
Happy Travels!

{Be Inspired!}: A Power Manifesto
It's amazing to realize that we're almost through the first month of 2014; my how time flies! As I thought of this, I began to think about how grateful I am to live the life I live and about how much more expectancy I am carrying forward into the months, weeks, and days ahead.
I discovered a manifesto early in the new year that immediately struck a chord with me and my aspirations for a life well lived. And while life will present its share of highs and lows and ups and downs, we can choose to embrace it in its fullness and remain full of hope, faith, joy, love--and inspiration.
I want to share this manifesto with you in hopes that it will boost your expectancy for more inspired living!
Happy Inspired Living!

{Hairstory}: Tribal Braids x Life Lessons
I must say I was delightfully surprised at all of the positive and affirming feedback my new look garnered and how it truly served to help me settle into my new hairstyle. Because let's face it--hair is a big deal. Whether you're deciding on texture, styling options, healthy maintenance, battling hair loss or diminished density due to improper care, illness, aging, etc., our hair is our crown of glory and is forever attached to our self-expression.
Back to my foray into the world of braids (beyond my previous, simpler, but no less lovely, cornrow styles), I decided to go for the tribal braids with inspiration drawn from Bo Derek's famous look in 10. My motivation was lifestyle ease, especially regarding those style-crushing workout sessions I mentioned earlier, coupled with my admiration for the sheer beauty of the style as worn by other women.
I said farewell to my braids on last night after my six week stint and can say that along with my hairstyle change came a greater self-appreciation and open-mindedness to express myself in ways I deem beautiful and authentic. I fell in love with this new expression of myself and added another notch in my hair story. See of more of my tribal braids looks here. :)

P.S. What is your hair story? Have you ever made a bold change to your hair?

{Be Inspired!}: Simple Pleasures
![]() |
| Photo Credit: The New York Times |
I'll admit that I love the grand, OMG, wow moments that punctuate our lives. But the reality is that those punctuation points are intermixed with the more tempered--and more frequent--normalcy of our everyday lives and routines. Routine isn't a bad thing, however--especially when sprinkled (or showered) with simple pleasures.
If you've never thought of simplicity and pleasure as likely bedfellows, I assure you they are. A favorite song. A talk with a good friend. A thought-provoking read. A motivating quote. Fresh flowers. An unforgettable meal. A great dress or shoe sale. :) A lingering sunset. The list becomes virtually endless when I take the time to pause and reflect and embrace the joy of everyday living.
So today's inspiration is all about sharing a few of the simple, but nonetheless special, pleasures that brought laughter, satiation, and the joie de vivre to my life this week.
A new recipe for my weeknight repertoire -- I discovered a "fried" chicken like dish that came together on a sheet pan in my oven. The results? Delicious crispy-skinned, moist chicken legs that are still as good the next day (without the added cleanup or calories of its fried counterpart.) See the easy recipe, courtesy of New York Times, here.
Farm-to-table meets the runway at Paris Fashion Week -- It sounds strange, I know. And it is. Except that we're talking jokes and fun and the quirky approach Valentino lended to its Autumn-Winter '15 runway show this week. I love fashion--and intermixed with a bit of Zoolander humor brought a welcomed laugh. Lighten up with this fun video parody.

A birthday party for me! -- So, Anthropologie just happens to be one of my favorite stores for everything from home and kitchen decor, to clothing, jewelry and more; we go way back. And I received a sweet surprise from them this week: an invitation to a birthday party for me (not a private party, but a party all the same!--a spring fashion show, sips and snacks, etc.). So a little shopping and celebrating are in order for this March birthday girl.
What are some of the simple pleasures that brighten your days?
May we all embrace more of them...along with Happy, Inspired Living!

{Be Inspired}: Dreamy Tablescapes
I love being inspired and typically my inspiration comes in many shapes and forms. But the one thing that remains constant is that wherever and however I find it, it always moves, awakens--and, yes--inspires me.
With that being said, I'm excited to introduce my BeInspired! Series here on DMRFF! Beyond my regular doses of food, travel, entertaining, and other yummy tidbits, occasionally I'll share the things, people, places and experiences that inspire me most in my day-to-day living, dreaming and being.
And it doesn't stop there, because I look forward to you joining the BeInspired! conversation and sharing your inspirations with me! To begin, keep reading and let's get started with my first installment.
As a girl who loves a gorgeous tablescape, I was immensely inspired by these beautiful works of table art! If you're into dreamy and over-the-top fabulous decor, then you'll probably love this healthy dose of inspiration as much as I do.
P.S....I can see some serious entertaining and dinner parties taking place around these tables!
